Arielle Nakache
Many locals start their day at the Icebergs pool before heading off to work. Arielle, who is an Event Manager at Realise Business in the city does exactly that.
Previously a comedy show producer and MC Arielle was known as the Queen of Fun.
Arielle has twin boys and a side hustle hosting singles community events. (You had us at twin boys! How do you do it?)
If you read yesterday’s post about M. Wimmer and Co. that used to exist on Hall Street, you’d understand where Arielle’s drive and energy come from. Arielle’s grandparents started the photo business in the late 1950s and both of them worked up until the day they died.
Arielle’s Bondi story:
“I was born in '72 and grew up on the 5th floor of a yellow block of apartments on Beach Road.
Born to hard working immigrant parents, my older sister and I spent much of our youth bike riding around our block, conjuring musical performances in our little 5th floor corridor and building cubby houses in the tiny shared garden or on our little balcony.
I loved our little Bondi bubble which also included spending a lot of time at my grandparents shop on Hall Street. For 30 years I enjoyed sitting on the stoop of the shop, sipping a milky coffee with my grandma Gisella, having a yarn and watching people walk past and laugh at the hundreds of local faces staring out at them from the shop’s windows.
In the 70's, we burnt our rubbish in our incinerator and waste was pushed out to the ocean. The smell of the sewerage plant on Blair street drifting down to our apartment block was putrid!
Our block was close to a huge fire that had broken out at an auto repair shop on Curlewis Street. I remember the flames being so big that our bedroom lit up orange which was very exciting!
My parents used to tell me and my sister to stay away from the pub on the corner (now known as Beach Rd Hotel) as it was 'rough'. In the 80's, you had to be careful walking on the sand as discarded syringes were lying about, and we used Reef Tanning Oil or butter to bronze ourselves. Chocolate Paddle Pops were 20c and in primary school, we were allowed to walk down to the local shops for fish and chips, or milk-shakes and 2c lolly bags from Bate's Milk Bar. $2 pocket money was a small fortune to a 10-year-old in the 80's!
I always loved the ocean - swimming, snorkelling and surfing are very much part of my life today, but I didn't start surfing until my late 30's. Joining the Bondi Girl's Surf Riders was a great boost to my confidence. Ater considering myself a beginner for years, I finally won my surfing division one year at the ripe age of 45! “
The first hour of the day:
“COFFEE. Then, I'll either be getting my twin boys out of bed for school, walking Tama, my part-time pooch, or cycling to the Icebergs for my ritual sauna, swim and coffee with a friend. In the summer, it's straight to the beach for a dip, snorkel or surf before starting work or more twin wrangling! Living in North Bondi, I absolutely love that I can ride my bike to the Rose Bay ferry to get into the CBD for work, so when I'm really organised I can squeeze in coffee, school prep and the ferry adventure all in the first hour to get to work on time.”
What motivates Arielle:
“FUN! Having hosted Comedy Nights as the Queen of Fun, I absolutely love bringing people together and delivering a seriously fun experience. I once heard that in thinking about the legacy you leave, it's worth considering the legacy you leave when you exit a conversation or a room. I do hope that anyone who meets me ends up giggling or feeling warm, happy vibes.”
