Art Bridges Culture at Bondi Beach | Shiva Dadvar and Emmanuel Asante
Waverley Council and Settlement Services International hosted a conversation last Saturday night in the Seagull Room at the Pavilion.
Artist and writer Kiri Zakinthinos spoke to young artists, Shiva Dadvar and Emmanuelle Asante, originally from Iran and Ghana respectively.
Waverley Council’s partnership with SSI is one of several projects aimed at helping refugees get a taste of their new home, and giving local residents an opportunity to learn more about the difficulties faced by these new arrivals.
Due to religious discrimination Shiva was unable to study in her home country. She has lived in Australia with her husband and her now 12 year old child for 3 years, and has been pursuing her art studies at TAFE NSW and recently took part in an exhibition at Callan Park.
Emmanuel started painting and drawing to help him deal with depression and other personal experiences. He is a recipient of the Youth Achievement Award in Creative Arts (2019) and has contributed to several projects, including with the Addison Road Community Centre, and Headspace Campbelltown.
Both artists work can be seen at the south end of the promenade.
Uncle Lloyd Walker gave the Welcome to Country, some of it in his Dharawal language. (If you’d like to hear some basic words in that language go HERE.)
