Melbourne artist, Danielle Weber, was commissioned by Lego and Football Australia to create this mural to celebrate the Matildas who are currently in the Round of 16 of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, playing Denmark tonight.
“As a female artist I am so thrilled to have been engaged to honour Australia’s very own Matildas!
I endeavour to connect with my audience by storytelling through my work. Painting this highly detailed, captivating mural is more than a celebration of women in football. It speaks to the inclusiveness of women in what has been a male dominated sport.
This artwork celebrates and highlights the power of women breaking down the barriers to achieve their full potential, which in turn inspires young athletes to do the same.
Using predominantly brushes and water based acrylic (and minimal use of aerosols), this hand painted mural took seven twelve-hour days to execute. This does not include the colour matching, preparation and stencil work done prior to commencing the paint.
The artwork was designed by Football Australia Creative Manager Ryan Ostle.
I made a conscious choice to engage female artists/assistants on this project - thank you Andrea Arias, Sol Magris and Laura Paige.
The iconic Bondi Beach location includes a multitude of cultures and demographics. This popular destination provides its community and those of far-reaching communities, the opportunity to access and connect with the artwork and celebrate the Matildas.
