Ben Buckler Amateur Fishing Club
We were giving Pearl a scramble on the rocks at Ben Buckler on the weekend when we ran into Darryl Nichols and his son Cooper near the boat ramp. Darryl is a member of the Ben Buckler Amateur Fishing Club, and he was kind enough to open the door and give us a peek inside this old school institution.
Not much has changed since 1973 it seems. We found this Sydney Morning Herald article headlined “It’s Boats Away! at Ben Buckler” that went on to describe a ‘club house’ that pretty much matched exactly the salty space that we had been shown by Darryl on the weekend 43 years later. Said the article: “The club offers few amenities. There is a telephone, a deep-freeze to keep bait in, lockers, a sink and hot and cold showers.“
This kind of thing gets our Bondi Fresh Daily hearts racing. Sometimes the absence of change is even more exciting than change itself. Long live the Ben Buckler Amateur Fishing Club … and the nobility of those basic amenities.
