Eva and Emma Zvarova
We met this gorgeous mother and daughter couple Eva and Emma at the Best and Brightest Business Awards last week. Emma’s company with soon to be husband Josh, Mint Plumbing and Relining, was runner up in their category.
Eva is originally from Slovakia so of course we were curious about what brought her to Australia and how she ended up in Bondi.
We will let Emma tell their story.
“A one-night stand offers more than a guilty pleasure.
My mum (Eva) ventured to Australia in 1994 after the borders fell in Slovakia to broaden her horizons, learn a new language, and experience a lifestyle she didn’t even know existed.
She landed a job at BP Petrol station on Bondi Road with no English. Luckily the accepting and patient nature of Bondi locals meant all Mum needed to do was run her finger across the displayed cigarettes until she stumbled on the desired choice.
Not only did the petrol station teach her the difference between Benson & Hedges and Winfield but she loved all the wonderful people she got to meet.
There’s nothing charming about getting picked up at a petrol station but that was the beginning of a summer fling. From a petrol station to a one-night stand to a pregnancy. Whoops …
Pregnant and not quite sure what to do she decided to start her new life in Bondi. A conservative society back home meant Bondi would be the only daring choice.
28 years on, the holiday never ended and Bondi is now home, the petrol station job is still the same [Ed: Eva is now store manager!], and she now knows her cigarettes with confidence.
Mum and I are proud and forever grateful to call Bondi home. It is a part of our identity. A Slovakian in Bondi. Vibe!
My partner couldn’t resist this beautiful place and decided to join our postcode.
Josh and I took a chance on our skills and decided to open a Plumbing company in July 2021 called Mint Plumbing & Relining.
The company name originally came from wanting to open a "fresh" new business. Josh's great-grandfather invented the beloved minties in 1922. The family confectionery company was located in Redfern. Today, Stedman Street is named in his memory.
Mint Plumbing & Relining to us represents family, proud small business operations, a tribute to where it all started. Our business is bright, fresh, fun, and minty. You can't miss us!
It’s been a journey and our achievements surprise us every day. The community has been kind and trusts us with our serviceability.
Josh and I are getting married in February 2024 and are excited about what the future has in store for us.
