Because of their popularity in Chinese communities the lucky cat is often assumed to be Chinese in origin. They actually hail from Japan and are believed to bring good luck to their owner.

You’ll see them displayed, usually at the entrance to shops, restaurants, dry cleaners, laundromats, bars, casinos, hotels, nightclubs, and other businesses. That arm is beckoning, not waving.
