Stuart Membery
Stuart Membery
Very high profile in the fashion industry in the 80s and 90s in Australia (remember the cow logo?), Stuart now splits his time between Bondi and Bali where he designs beautiful things for the home. See Stuart Membery Home Collection.
Stuart spent his teen years on the northern beaches but after a stint in the US came to live in the eastern suburbs in 1982 (we’re not doing ANY counting here Stuart). “On sunny weekends and holidays the usual suspects gathered on Tamarama Beach.”.
Somewhere along the way he and the gang relocated to Bondi. “I still have no idea which is the north or south end. It’s either Lamrock end or Speedos end. I DO know the middle is the Paris end!.
Anyway, we upped stumps and moved to the Lamrock end for the rest of the 80’s. Very happy times for both work and play!”
Next stop for Stuart and his cohort was the Speedos end where they set themselves up at the “second garbage bin from the ramp” under a fringed blue and white umbrella where they spent a good part of the 90s.
These days, if you don’t see Stuart somewhere on the promenade, he is most likely en route to projects in the US or Europe. His interior design company also has offices and a studio in Bali. If he wasn’t busy enough, “we have recently completed building and decorating @PineappleHill_Bali … a rental vacation Villa to showcase our furniture, fabrics and accessories for the home."
Stuart is described by most people who know him as a workaholic. “On the day of my funeral I’ll probably work right up till lunch!” Stuart is also a lover and creator of beautiful things.
Any regrets Stuart? “Regrets - I’ve had a few, but too few to mention …”
Stuart spends the first hour of his day “on auto pilot. I manage to get to Speedos for a coffee followed by a random amount of time staring into space/the ocean. Sometimes a walk on the promenade”.
