Bondi History | Sam the Butcher
Bondi History | Sam the Butcher
There has been a butcher at 129 Bondi Road almost consistently since 1946 (when the top photo was taken).
Back then it was owned by the Nicholson family. At some point it passed on to Grant’s Meats.
Robert Grant was the landlord who Sam Diasinos contacted in late 1999 after seeing a For Lease sign in the window. Robert had wound the business down only weeks before Sam was driving down Bondi Road with his family on his way to a day at the beach.
Sam opened his Bondi business, Sam the Butcher, in 2000, keeping the same layout since the shop’s early days.
The layout may be the same but we think that perhaps some of Sam’s organic, bio-dynamic, grass-fed offerings might not have had a place in either Nicholson’s or Grant’s windows.
