So much fabulousness here. We were smitten even before laying eyes on Amanda herself.
We came across her foyer at the entrance to her apartment on our way up Bondi Road. There was so much colour and joy it made our hearts sing! (Unbelievably it is under threat from a neighbour with an agenda).
We HAD to meet Amanda. And if you meet Amanda you are going to meet Dudley.
Amanda invited us into her home and, as expected, it was a wonder of collectible curios and art works of hers and others (including her sister Francine Lawler’s incredible book that she created for Amanda. See above).
Amanda is self taught. She came to her art practise and life in Bondi after a devastating car accident 12 years ago. We’ll let her tell her story.

“Well, I grew up in Queensland and one morning 12 years ago, I was driving my little car over a bridge and a guy on a variety of illegal drugs swerved across the lanes and hit my car head-on. Many broken bones, months in hospital and rehabilitation…  post traumatic depression followed.

I started making textile sculptures in bright colours as a kind of therapy to take my mind off things. They’re my furry anti-depressants”.

Years later, when I got a damages payment for the accident I used it to buy my little apartment in Bondi Beach and found that people loved my sculptures and wanted to own them. A solo exhibition at The Bondi Pavilion followed soon after with sculptures being sold to clients in the USA and another of my “creatures” being sold to the head of a German Music publisher / record company.

How do you spend the first hour of your day?

My (local celebrity/professional model) Yorkshire Terrier @Dudley The Rock n Roll Yorkie,  wakes me up by whimpering in my ear until I get up and prepare him a magnificent breakfast (none of that tinned rubbish) and then I apologise profusely that I have to leave him for an hour or so, and I go to Bodhimaya Pilates which is really helping with my recovery.

Is there one thing you’d like people to know about you?

Just that you can contact me @Amanda.baby.pie if you would like to own some of my work.
