Shipton's Dump
Shipton's Dump
This is how building refuse was dealt with in the 70s. This photo is from the early stages of the sprawling and highly visible 2-4 Notts Avenue development.
A local resident reckoned you could get down to the beach from the railing at the top via the dump. “I climbed up and sat on top of the increasing pile of rubble as they dumped it over. A guy yelled for me to get away or he’d call the police. I said “go ahead, I’ll wait here till they arrive!!!I"
It was time for the ramshackle old Tearooms to go and for a new luxury apartment building to take its place. The Shipton Group was responsible for the demolishing and the rebuilding.
Thank you Candis Diaz at Waverley Library for your assistance with information on this photograph.
