A few weeks ago we posted a photograph of the mural on the side wall of Bondi Tony’s Burger Joint. That is how we first come into contact with fledgling illustrator/animator Saachi Owen who created the work in collaboration with @neptura.art and @skullofstatic.art. “To have been able to make a mark on the place I call home has been a spectacular experience.”

Saachi has lived in Bondi for all of her 22 years. “I remember vividly my dad taking me to the beach as a kid and I would look at the murals along the wall and imagine what I would paint on there when I got the chance”.

We wondered what motivates this young artist fresh out of uni. “I’m heavily motivated by stories. Both those we hear from others and the ones we tell ourselves. I love to track journeys and explore the things we leave behind, which is why I love animation so much. I recently found an old camera of my grandmas and I’ve been using that to capture candid photos, which has really romanticised my day-to-day life by framing everything in beautiful ways”.

How do you spend the first hour of your day? “I’d love to say I jump out of bed and go on a morning walk or something, but in reality I start every day off with a bowl of cereal and a good YouTube video. It’s my equivalent of reading the daily paper.”

Is there one thing you’d like people to know about you? “I’m in the beginning stages of my career and looking for every opportunity to put my skills towards exciting projects. So if anyone is in need of a bright-eyed new grad with artistic skills under their belt, I’m your guy!”
