Yolngu Artist Banduk Marika
Bondi Fresh Daily went along to the Bondi precinct meeting a week ago. Run by the indefatigable Lenore Kulakauskas, the meeting was specifically about possible other uses of the Bondi Pavilion and the importance of the building as a community space.
MC’d by Michael Caton, there were several speakers on the night. Local Terry Jenkings gave an impassioned plea for a space within the Pavilion to tell the stories that are being lost into the ether about Bondi and its community.
Cooee owner Adrian Newstead spoke beautifully about the sacredness of the Pavilion to us all. Being a specialist in Aboriginal art, Adrian told us about the various murals and mosaics in and around the building. We were told about Banduk Marika (pictured above), a Yolngu artist who created the piece pictured above for the Bicentennial in 1988 thanks to a grant from the City of Sydney.
It’s a privilege to have these pieces amongst us here in Bondi.
