People of Bondi | Harald Straatvelt & Jo McKenzie

You’ve met Harald before … HERE. He’s an architect. His partner Jo works part time as a designer for Citizen Group as well as freelancing.

Jo first lived in Bondi in 1986 when “there was only one café,” and has lived here since 1990 … in three separate South Bondi locations.

Q: What do you love Jo?

“I love the light in the bay at the end of the day. It can be pretty messy during the day, but as the sun drops down the bay regains its beauty. I admit I do split my time at the beach between Bronte, Tama and Bondi. I share my love and coffee money around - once a week.

Nude night swimming at the Icebergs in 1986 is another reason to have loved this place for a long time. But this is a family blog!” Jo tells us that this important piece of Bondi history “was before the front Boardwalk so the pool was actually quite private. You had to climb over and through the old turnstile to get in. Most often when we went there was half a dozen of us.”
