Abbie Pal's Poem About Bondi

When you tap someone on their shoulder to find out something about them you never know what you’re going to get. From the moment Abbie turned around we knew we had met someone who is special and unique. Abbie is open to the world. And we can only imagine that the world is open to Abbie because of it.

Abbie lives in Blacktown but comes to Bondi often because she loves it here. She comes for exercise, to stroll or to sit on the beach. She is studying Spanish and marketing.

Abbie is also a poet. She has written a poem for us that beautifully evokes our part of the world.

you don’t have to know its history
to be enchanted by Bondi’s mystery
let me tell you about a special place of mine
and share it with you like a bottle of wine:
warm, sun-kissed waves from friend to friend
crashing against the beach from end to end
i run my hand through the golden sand
as i perk right up, to the latin band
their lively music rivals that of the dancing ocean
the liveliness of this place, ironically a calming notion
come ride this wave of harmony and diversity
like the surfers i see, after my class at university
the friendly faces of dogs, excited for my affection
stop by me - breaking my trance of reflection
i smile and continue along the promenade, to admire the treasure before me - the beach
i’m grateful for life’s joys, looking to the skyline of penthouses near to eye’s reach
every soul is welcome to this place here
like me - from afar, or those who live near
returning to it’s calming, warm welcome, now a beautiful second home
i reminisce my first sunset here, whenever i frequently roam
i look to the horizon as i slowly pass the time
taking in the mesmerising view, not spending a dime
it’s free! - that cool feeling of the Bondi breeze
whether at dawn or at golden hour, i feel at ease
i cannot deny it is a breathtaking tourist hotspot
after all, the junction is a communal melting pot
- of relaxation, partying, and so much laughter
there’s plenty of things to do, now and right after
one might stop me to ask and wonder - “Why journey from the West out to Bondi?”
but i need not to ponder, it’s a destination worth my time, effort & peace - that’s why
during summer’s harsh warmth, i flock to the expansive beach for a swim
between the flags, a refreshing activity whether it’s planned or on a whim
even when the sun cheekily hides, it always comes back
i’m comforted for a long while, except when the seagulls attack
but i still laugh, whether i’m alone or with my mates
because of the joy of entering Mother Nature’s gates
it’s always difficult to go home at day’s end, when i must say goodbye
there’s simply no place like it that gives me a lasting, addictive high
Let the waves hit & engulf your feet
Where the sea gloriously fights the land
Let the sand be your comforting seat
Arise from it with a helping hand
However apart, we are connected together by heart
I’ve fallen in love with Bondi, nature’s heavenly work of art

Thank you Abbie.
